You might be surprised to find that solar technology began development as early as the 1860s. That’s not to say that the technology was ready for use, but still. That’s more than a century of development. By now, you’d think every house would have a row of solar panels on the rooftop. It’s 2018, and this still isn’t the case. Perhaps if they were more widely available and affordable, it could happen soon. Which is why we’re excited that Nissan is throwing its technological hat into the ring to create Nissan Energy Solar, which will be a new division of the company that sells solar panels and energy storage packs for the house.
When will Nissan Solar Energy sell solar panels?
The question isn’t if, but when. In 2016, Nissan flaunted stationary battery packs, and it sounds like these will soon be made available for sale. All we know at this time is that these packs will be available in the U.K. and eventually other European countries, but there hasn’t been an official announcement for the American market.

Still, it’s a good sign. The more demand generated for solar panels, the more likely that we’ll see them go into mass production. This lowers the price and makes them easier to get your hands on. Nissan is also not the only automotive company doing this, which means that we could see supply growing the way we’re slowly seeing electric vehicle charging stations expand.
Why might you want solar energy? We probably don’t even need to answer that question if you took a glance at your last electric bill. What if we told you that on a sunny day solar panels can provide more energy than you need? We can’t say that every day will be illuminated with those potent UV rays, but on the days when the clouds break, you’ll be saving money. The battery packs will also save any excess for future use. Plus isn’t there something feel-good about knowing you’re getting your electricity through a natural resource?
