How does Nissan Pedestrian Detection work

How does Nissan Pedestrian Detection work?

It’s unfortunately all too easy to get distracted on the road, and other drivers can be unpredictable. You take your eyes away for a second and suddenly someone is braking for no known reason. That’s frustrating enough, but pedestrians provide an added difficulty as it can be hard to see someone coming out into the street from in between parked cars. Fortunately, Nissan has come out with available Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection to make things easier. So how does the system work?

What is Pedestrian Detection?

Most people know by now that Forward Emergency Braking is a technology that helps your Nissan brake when you fail to do so when an obstacle is detected in front of the vehicle. Front cameras and radar technology operate to “see” objects in front of you and sense distance, and if a collision is likely to occur your brakes will automatically be applied. In some instances, this means that accidents will be prevented entirely, but at the very least the damage will be limited.

Of course, the system provides audio and visual alerts before it even applies the brakes, so you won’t be taken by surprised when the system operates.

So how is Pedestrian Detection different?

Normally when you consider accident prevention, you’re considering higher speeds, greater following distances and more predictability. You’re also considering targets directly in front of you. Pedestrian detection must recognize human shapes, react more forcefully, work in lower speed zones and sense shapes at the periphery of where you are most likely looking since most pedestrians will start out at the sidelines.

Keep in mind that Pedestrian Detection, like all driver assistance features, is not meant to lead to unsafe driving practices. There are many instances when it won’t help completely avoid accidents, especially at high speeds, and the system is less effective during nighttime driving or when visibility is low.
