Who was the Founder of Nissan?

Towards the end of this year, what drivers know the company to be will be celebrating its 86th anniversary. However, the history of the iconic automobile manufacturer goes even further back than that. So, throughout all of the history of the automaker, who was the founder of Nissan?

Way back in July of 1911, Masujiro Hashimoto founded the Kaishinsha Motor Car Works, which in Japanese essentially translated to “a good company automobile manufacturer.” Their first car, the DAT, was named after a few of the company investors, taking the first letter of the last names of Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meltaro Takeuchi.

Later in 1928, a man named Yoshisuke Aikawa founded a holding company called Nihon Sangyo, later abbreviated to Nissan. While the new company had various auto parts businesses, they did not fully enter the automobile manufacturing race until the end of 1933. Aikawa wasn’t just the founder of Nissan, but also served as the company’s first president.

In 2013, Nissan was recognized as the sixth largest automobile manufacturer in the world behind Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Ford. In 2014, Nissan became the largest car manufacturer in North America. In fact, Nissan is also the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, thanks in part to the popularity of the Nissan LEAF.
