The Rear Door Alert was actually invented by two mothers who were also engineers when one of them accidentally left a pan of lasagna in the back seat of their car overnight, wondering what could have happened if it was something more important. Because of this, the Rear Door Alert will audibly remind a driver with the horn, as well as use sensors and the vehicle’s display to alert owners if they start walking away from the vehicle and have left something in their car.

The Rear Door Alert was first seen as a standard feature on the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder, which is often seen as a fantastic vehicle option for families. For the 2019 model year, Nissan is adding the Rear Door Alert standard on 8 new vehicles such as the highly anticipated 2019 Rogue and 2019 Altima. However, the manufacturer is going to keep pushing RDA technology, as Nissan plans to have the Rear Door Alert standard on all of their 4-door sedans, trucks and SUVs by the 2022 model year.
