Transferring your vehicle ownership in Illinois 

When you are in the market for a new vehicle, one of the steps is to sell your old vehicle. If you are unsure what the process of changing the ownership of your old vehicle, keep reading. We have all the steps you will need to take to make the switch official.

If someone has bought your vehicle 

On the back of your current title, there will be a form you need to fill out which includes the entire Assignment of Title section. Some items you need to list includes the mileage, the sales date, name of the buyer and don’t forgot your signature. Once everything is filled out, take off your license plates, these you get to keep. After the purchase is complete, complete the Seller’s Report of Sale and submit the form through the mail.  

If you are gifting or inheriting your vehicle to a friend or family member 

The gifting process will be the same as the procedure already mentioned. Vehicles that are inherited will have the transfer process done by the estate. If there is more than one name on the title, there will be a $15 transfer fee. The executor of the estate will assign the title to the recipient. If the value of the vehicle is $100,000 or less, the recipient will need to provide the Seller’s Report of Sale with a  copy of the will, copy of death certificate, vehicle’s information and title.
