Why does the 2017 Nissan Juke require premium fuel?

Gas prices are always an issue, but it’s especially so when the costs go up. Even more so if your vehicle requires premium fuel. If you’ve found yourself behind the wheel of the 2017 Nissan Juke, there are likely plenty of reasons you like the model, including high-end features and a unique design. The fact that it requires premium? Unlikely to be one of the top features you list when showing it off. Rather, you’re probably here wondering why your vehicle needs to use premium in the first place.

If you check the owner’s manual for the 2017 Nissan Juke, you’ll find the vehicle recommends 91 AKI premium unleaded gasoline. AKI stands for anti-knock, and you’re essentially looking for 96 octane. Nissan does say if you find that this is unavailable, you can use 91 octane, but you might see a decrease in performance. Essentially, you use higher octane to achieve the horsepower output listed on your engine specs. In the 2017 Nissan Juke, we’re talking 188 horsepower on the standard trim level.

One thing to note is that the Nismo RS trim is more strict with the 96 octane requirement. You may use 91, but should only fill halfway with unleaded regular gasoline and then use premium as soon as possible. You should also avoid abrupt acceleration or full-throttle driving until you can fill with the required premium gas.

So do you need to use premium? No. Modern engines do better to adjust and prevent engine knock, so you won’t necessarily damage your vehicle. What you will find is a noticeable decrease in power output, however. This is especially noticeable in vehicles with a turbocharger, which the Nissan Juke does have.

If you have a lead foot, you’ll notice the difference. If you’re light on the gas, you may not. Do you use regular gas in your Juke? Share your experience here at the Glendale Nissan Blog.
